98 Seville random no start issue

$

Hey all,

I'm new here and new to Cadillac's, but always been a GM guy.
Just got my first Cadi, a 98 Seville STS, and I'm having a random issue with it not starting. Turn the key and get noting. No starter click or any thing.
Its happened three times in the week I've had the car. First time I left key in ignition after trying to start several times, scrolled through dash display to see battery voltage, which was 12.3v and it started right up. Second time I tried same thing and it didn't work, locked doors with remote entry and car started right up. This morning It happened again, tried the same as last two times, with no luck. waited about a min tried to start car again and it started right up. All three times it has been after the car has sat for a wile.

Any one have any idea what could be going on. It seems to be completely random and I cant figure out any thing in particular that lets the car start.

Thanks in advance for any help and I look forward to learning from you guys and being an active member of the community.

Is there a shop manual view of the heater hoses for a 2002 Eldorado? I would like to replace all the heater hoses but I can't find a way to get to the connections.
Thanks

2001 ETC Intermittent High Idle

I experienced and seemed to have resolved an intermittent high idle problem. Occasionally the idle speed does't fall below 1200 rpm or higher causing a high coolant temperature. No DTC. I removed the idle air control (IAC) valve. It had a lot of soot on it. I cleaned the plunger, shaft and hole where it was mounted thoroughly with carburetor cleaner. I also cleaned the throttle body that wasn't too dirty. I wanted to replace the throttle position sensor (TPS), no DTC, but couldn't get to the retaining screws with a screw driver!

Does anyone know how to remove the two Phillip's head retaining screws on the TPS? There is not enough clearance for a 90 degree screw driver to fit between the screw and a thick metal piece where the coolant crossover is mounted. The repair manual does not explain how to get to the screws other than removing the water pump belt cover.

I have a 97 ETC that stalls out when put into reverse. It also stalls sometimes when coming to a complete stop. (Usually when doing less than 15 mph) I have worked on caddys my entire driving career (11 years) and I'm stumped. Please help. I have checked fuses and no lights or warnings come on except the oil light flashes. These issues may or may not be related.

Car idling rough (sounds like a misfire) - Pulled codes!

Hey guys!

So, I have been working on my 2001 Cadillac Seville STS for the past week.
Hoping to have it running properly for tomorrow, as I REQUIRE my car for work... and have already missed too many days of work. Going to get fired soon if I don't get my vehicle situation fixed. :(

It started out as a no-start issue. - Turn key to start, and all power to the car is cut off.

I fixed that by cleaning a bunch of ground connections and wiring harnesses. - Starts fine now!
For the past 2 days (after I finally got it starting properly) it was idling and running PERFECT!

Then when I went out to the garage today, it started fine, but wouldn't idle without me keeping my foot on the gas... and it was running very rough. (kinda felt like a misfire).
There was also some WHITE SMOKE coming from the exhaust. Not alot... but it was still floating around the back of the car.
My friend connected his code reader to the car, and it said CYLINDER 2 MISFIRE.

I removed the front coil pack, and took out the spark plugs. The Cylinder 2 spark plug was dark and damp.
To find out if it was the spark plug OR coil pack, I switched spark plugs 2 and 4.

NOW it starts and idles fine by itself. (perhaps idles a bit low though).
And the white smoke is almost not noticeable now.
---But it seems to still be running a little bit rough. (feels like a misfire).

I ran the codes on my dashboard (my friend took his code reader, so I had to do it on the dash).
I don't see any Cylinder Misfire Codes.

This is what came up:

ABS C1232 Current - LF Wheel Speed Circuit Open or Shorted
ABS C1241 Current - Variable Effort Steering Circuit Malfunction
ABS C1246 Current - EBCM Turned the Red Brake Warning Indicator On
ABS C1248 Current - EBCM Turned the Red Brake Warning Indicator On
ABS C1254 Current - Abnormal Shutdown Detected
ABS C1298 Current - PCM Class 2 Serial Data Link Malfunction

IPC U1000 Current - Class 2 Communication Malfunction

IRC U1016 History - Loss of Communications with PCM

PCM P0036 Current - HO2S Heater Control Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 2
PCM P0106 Current - Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) System Performance
PCM U1040 Current - Loss of Class 2 Communications with ABS
PCM P1652 Current - Powertrain Induced Chassis Pitch Output Circuit

RSS C0579 Current - Left Front Solenoid Circuit Open
RSS C0584 Current - Right Front Solenoid Circuit Open
RSS C0615 Current - Left Front Position Sensor Malfunction
RSS C0620 Current - Right Front Position Sensor Malfunction
RSS C0710 Current - Steering Position Signal Malfunction

Any input is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!
You guys have been so AMAZING to me so far!
Thanks in advance! ;-)

97 STS passenger side blend door actuator seems to work ok but zone still blows hot

$

My 97 STS's passenger side blend door actuator seems to be working ok, moving the arm in and out according to heat/cool (I've watched it), but still always blows hot on the passenger side with dual zone off, and cool air blowing on the driver's side appropriately.

I've read some say that this indicates the AC coolant needs to be topped off, but the pressures look ok, and it happens whether AC is on or off (with AC Off per the display) so that it only blows cool air from outside temp, 50 degrees).

When I remove the arm from the actuator, and move it all the way to the right (beyond where the actuator stops it) it then blows warm air on the driver side, even with the temp set to 60). The interior temp is +/- 80 degrees, so it shouldn't be sensing that it needs to warm the interior in order to get to 60, and it does blow cool on the driver's side when the actuator arm is reattached.

I'm not inclinded to think the door is broken, I can hear it open and close when I move the arm manually, however:

Error - ACM B1341 - Air mix door 2 movement fault

I have also disconnected the battery for 30 minutes, then turned the ignition to on for 2.

What am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

92 eldorado 4.9 touring idle/rpm problem

Hello all, recently have done lots of work on the car, replaced the intake manifold and have had issues getting it to run right since then. Just replaced the ISC and am wondering if there is something with the onboard computer to adjust that or where the adjustment screw should be set? it has an uneven idle, by which i mean it floats around a 1000, when you get on the gas hard it jumps up very high and flutters, also when you slow down at a stop it will drop very low. Thank you. any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Overheating with full coolant

I have 99 cadillac sls with 105k miles on it. The radiator, cap, thermostat has been replaced brand new earlier this year. Since then it's been fine, but now its overheating with full 50/50 coolant in it. It then starts to leak coolant on passenger side front end of engine when it started to overheat. I turned the car off but the computer takes over making the engine run idle and radiator fans on. I am curious to if it's a external/internal leak, water pump , thermostat, hose, or cap. No head gasket has been blown yet no visible or audible damage. Besides the leak underneath as stated above.:suspect:

1992 Seville Base Model 4.9 L Fuel Pump Humming

The fuel pump on my Son's Caddy seems to be humming quite a bit. It's noticeable when the window's down and at idle but less so when the vehicle is underway and windows up for the AC.

What's a fuel pump failure sound like before it becomes a reality and the car won't start?

Or, is a light humming normal?

99 Eldo annual expenses?

I just ran across a 99 Eldorado with 66k miles on it and it's going for about 6 grand. It's the classic one owner dream, old guy that follows the maintenance schedule whether he needs to or not. I was looking for a practical 10 thousand dollar car with low maintenance and repair costs. A 99 eldo is clearly a large step in the opposite direction. I'm not mechanically inclined, so what do you regularly spend each year maintaining and repairing your Cadi?
I've always wanted a late 90's eldo, but could never afford one. Now that I have the money I'm not sure if I can afford to maintain it.

HG Head Gasket starting to go: Repair the car or sell??

Hi All,
I'm more of an observer than active poster, but I have a moment to see what opinions are out there:

The car:
2000 STS

The Good:
Paid $3700 for it with 108,000 miles on it December 2011
Interior is in great shape (no rips tears etc)
Exterior is in great shape with a few small dings on the front fenders
No rust (Oregon valley car)
New radiator
Clean engine, no oil leaks
Flawless tranny (so far)

The Bad:
Head Gasket is starting to leak (overheats in temps above 60 degrees, uses 1/2 gallon coolant per 500 miles, starts rough then idles out smooth after a few minutes)
ABS out (highly possible just the control unit connections, haven't had time to remove and clean)
Suspension shakes between 68-74 a bit, especially when heavy braking (seems to be mostly rear), pretty stable from 80 to 120 mph oddly enough
Torque Convert solenoid not working
Steering column sensor not working (from before the ABS failed)
157,000 miles

These guys can do a nice job on the engine with a 2 year warranty, for about $2400
http://www.gmrepaircenter.com/cadill...pair-blog.html

Do you all think it would be worth it to fix the head gasket issue at this point? If I did this, does anybody have their Caddy pushing high miles after this repair (like 220,000+)? I really love this car and feel it may be worth it to drop $3000 into it and get it back to fully functional, compared to alternatives out there. What do ya think?

Lots' of Pinging at Moderate Throttel. Where do I start?

Son's car is at college most of the time. Came home to fly out of the country for 10 days and when we dropped him off at the departure gate with the doors open I heard pinging.

Drove home on the freeway (moderate throttle) and with windows down, no other vehicles around and AC off and heard it a lot. In driveway, don't hear it.

Don't know what octane gas he filled up with and only recently learned that some stations sell 91 as Premium, whereas, I always thought it was 93 octane.

Anyway, he lost an upper radiator hose recently and the car seemed to run hot. I burped the cooling system, replaced all coolant, replace the thermostat (195) and it runs a lot cooler now. But the pinging remains although I THINK it's a bit less now.

When my truck pings I get recommendations to lower the thermo to 180, use one with a jiggle plug, use a 20 lb. radiator cap and check the EGR and MAF. Where should I start with the Seville?

Are Any Years More Reliable Than Other Years On Seville's Or Eldorado's?

$

I am looking for a winter car and my brother used to have a 92 Seville 4.9 until it started leaking trans fluid and oil profusely, he loved the car and I always liked the looks and the hwy gas mileage. Now that I am in the hunt for a nice condition Seville or Eldorado I thought I would ask people that own these cars if some years tend to be more reliable than others. I have read that the 4.9 is pretty much bullet proof and the northstar has HG problems. Did they fix the HG problem in the newer cars? Is there any reason to avoid the older 97 and older for the newer 98 up cars?
Please give your opinions and any advice for buying a nice older Cadillac.
Thanks Foos

1979-1985 Eldorado - landau roof & 4.1 L engine questions

$

Folks -
I like the body style of the '79 to '85 Eldorado and am looking for a Biarritz model, but I don't like the vinyl "landau" roof treatment. It
seems like every Biarritz model from those years that I've seen has the landau roof - did every Biarritz model in fact come with it?

Also, is the 4.1 L engine such a turkey that I should avoid any car with it and just hope to find a nice '79 with the Olds 350? Or is swapping out the
4.1 a common fix?

Thanks

Momentary loss of power after high G turn, but engine does not die.

Practicing for upcoming autocross by driving aggressively; taking some 90 degree turns at 30+ MPH and also braking hard before other sharp turns. 2002 Eldorado ESC looses power after apex of turn (like a hesitation) for a second or two before recovering. It does not noticeably miss, or stutter, and the engine does not die. Is this a loss of fuel pressure or transmission fluid pressure or what? Upcoming race id December 8th and I need to get it fixed before then.
